Other Conditions of Particular Importance to the Border Collie

Hip Dysplasia

This term describes a developmental condition whereby the growing dog’s hip joints fail to form an optimal smooth ‘ball and socket’ joint and instead form with irregularities in various parts of the joints. This leads to arthritis and lameness as the dog matures. Affected dogs can experience wide variations in the impact of the condition on their quality of life, so managing the disease has to be tailored to the individual dog. Various ‘conservative’ treatments (diet, painkillers, physiotherapy, joint supplements) or more aggressive surgical treatments (including total hip replacements) exist.

Because of the hereditary genetic nature of the disease, dogs intended for breeding can be screened for the disease once they are over one year old. X-rays of the hips are sent to the British Veterinary Association for hip scoring, and results are published by the Kennel Club. Dogs do not have to be KC registered to be hip-scored. A low score is desirable, and for breeding Border Collies this should ideally be less than the breed median (average) score, which is currently ten.
